History
American
Metal Treating is a family held commercial heat treating company since 1929.
Founded by Jessie Teegarden on E. 62nd Street in Cleveland, Ohio, American
Metal Treating had modest beginnings.
As a
conventional heat treating operation, American Metal Treating foresaw the
benefits of a then new induction technology. By the early 1950's, the first
induction hardening machines were installed at the E. 62nd St. facility.
With several important customers in the mining industry looking for other
gear and sprocket tooth hardening methods, AMT purchased new their first
Ajax Magnethermic gear hardening machine in 1963. AMT was one of the first
commercial heat treaters to purchase such a gear hardener.
By the late 1960's, AMT
had four locations around Cleveland, offering a full range of heat treating
services as well as a machine shop. Additional gear hardening equipment was
acquired as more gear manufacturers began to recognize the advantages of
tooth by tooth induction hardening.
As the heat treating
market contracted in the late 1970's and early 1980's, AMT refocused the
business to strictly induction hardening. Heat treating furnaces were sold
to make way for additional induction capacity. By the late 1980's, AMT's
reputation in the gear industry was recognized as a leader in tooth by tooth
induction hardening services.
Through the 1990's, AMT
tooth by tooth induction hardening was such a sought after service that an
expansion of capacity was in order. A new building, containing a 15 ton
crane bay, was built in 2000 to handle the larger industrial gears as well
as add gear hardening capacity. Additional machines were installed to where
AMT now has more capacity for tooth by tooth induction hardening than any
other commercial heat treaters.
